Rule One of Business: Get Paid

To be paid, just as you would imagine is fundamentally fundamental in your business because if you aren’t paid, what’s the point in business?

You would be laughing at the heaps of business people who allow their customer base to pay them when and if they remember it. I know of such a businessman who always collects bad debts like accolades. How? Probably because he can’t bring himself to demand the cash and people just intimidate him.

If you let a customer credit, do so only when they proved consistency to you by paying cash on delivery (COD) for a period. Secondly, you should see whether they have the cash to pay you - if not why do business with them. Don’t trick yourself into thinking “I need the work” or “I need the sales”. It’s pointless doing the service or providing the goods for zip if you don’t get paid.

If you are the type of person who can’t demand the fee even after the work has been done, try these cheats:
Tell your customer that when the work is completed, you will require cash or cheque. They should be likely to have it to hand over at at the finish date and you will not have to ask for your payment.

When you hand out your quote, make sure your payment terms are clear.

Form an invoice including the terms of payment clearly listed and hand the client the invoice when the job is finished. They can review the invoice and simply realise they have to pay it off now without you having to say a word. Fabricate a “vicious boss” who may burn you alive if you can not go back with the cash for the job.

Arrange with your banking to hook you up with Merchant facilities so you can have credit cards including Mastercard and Visa. Most people own credit cards and it would fix the difficulty of the client not holding a cheque account or not having the right cash in their wallet.

Otherwise, don’t be persuaded against to hold onto the goods til after payment has been made. Know, until the goods are paid for, the goods still are yours.

If you decide to permit a customer credit, make sure you have the following details of them at a point PREVIOUSLY you allow them credit.

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Bank name and address
  • Account no.
  • 3 trade references with their names, addresses and phone numbers

After you record all this information, telephone the bank and make for sure that they have an account then. Then, telephone each of the trade reference and find out if they pay their bills punctually or if they have had any problems with them.

Most people will be willing to tell you if the person is troublesome. If everything is OK, allow them a moderate level of debt, say no more than $500 (depending on your business). Monitor the operation of the account for a few months before allowing this amount to be exceeded.
